Product Description

WOODWARD 2301D 8273‑126

Product Description

The Woodward 2301D (part number 8273‑126) is a microprocessor‑based digital speed and load‑sharing controller. It is a panel‑mount governor designed for generator prime movers, accepting magnetic pickup speed input plus CT/PT measurements for real and reactive load control. It features a front‑panel LCD and keypad for local configuration and monitoring, Modbus RTU serial communication, configurable digital inputs and relay outputs, and analog drive output for fuel actuators. The operating power supply is 18–40 VDC. This model is obsolete from original Woodward production. Only surplus, used or refurbished units are available on the market, which should be fully bench‑tested and calibrated prior to installation.

Product Functions

  • Precise closed‑loop speed regulation using magnetic pickup (MPU) frequency signal
  • Isochronous or droop load sharing for multiple generators operating in parallel
  • Analog current output to drive electronic fuel actuators for fuel rack adjustment
  • Transient load response optimisation including load pulse and load rejection functions
  • Built‑in overspeed detection with relay trip output for engine protection
  • Local parameter setup, runtime data viewing and fault history storage via keypad and display
  • Modbus RTU communication over RS‑422 for remote monitoring, setpoint adjustment and SCADA integration
  • Configurable discrete inputs and relay outputs for external interlocks, status feedback and alarm signalling

Application Scenarios

  • Stationary diesel and gas generator sets for industrial power plants
  • Marine auxiliary generator paralleling and speed control systems
  • Oil and gas compressor skids and offshore platform power packages
  • Emergency and standby generator installations with multi‑unit parallel operation
  • Retrofit projects replacing older analog governors or early digital control hardware
  • Microgrid systems requiring synchronized generator load sharing

Common Issues

  • Speed hunting: improperly tuned PID parameters, noisy MPU signal or mechanical backlash on the actuator linkage
  • Uneven load sharing after paralleling: reversed CT polarity, mismatched CT ratios or incorrect load‑sharing gain settings
  • Loss of actuator drive output: damaged internal output circuitry, loose terminal connections or wrong output mode configuration
  • Intermittent speed measurement failure: excessive MPU air gap, damaged pickup sensor or poor shield grounding
  • Communication errors: mismatched baud rate, duplicate node address, missing termination resistor or reversed RS‑422 wiring
  • Blank or frozen front display: unstable DC power supply, ageing internal power components or firmware lock‑up
  • Parameter corruption on power cycle: degraded non‑volatile memory; saved configuration files are recommended for backup
  • Supply limitation: brand new original OEM controllers are no longer produced. Refurbished units require full functional testing and calibration before commissioning.
