Woodward 8290‑184 EPG Isochronous Speed Governor Controller
Product Description
8290‑184 is an EPG series isochronous electronic speed governor manufactured by Woodward, operating with 24 VDC power supply. It receives frequency signal from magnetic pickup sensor within 3000‑6000 Hz range, compares actual engine speed against speed set‑point, and outputs drive signal to fuel actuator for diesel and gas prime movers. Equipped with built‑in start fuel limit function, it maintains constant engine speed under varying load conditions for generator sets. Compact panel‑mount housing with terminal block wiring, designed for heavy‑duty engine control environments with anti‑vibration and EMC interference resistance.

Product Features
- Isochronous speed control to keep constant rotational speed for generator parallel operation
- Magnetic pickup input: 3000‑6000 Hz frequency range, minimum 1.5 V RMS sensor signal requirement
- Integrated start fuel limit function to restrict maximum fuel position during engine cranking
- On‑board adjustable potentiometers for speed, gain, droop and stability tuning on site
- Direct actuator drive output to control fuel valve position of diesel / gas engine
- 24 VDC operating power supply for engine cabinet battery‑powered systems
- Panel‑mount compact structure, terminal block connection for field wiring
- Analog indicator LED for speed status and working condition diagnosis
- Robust hardware resistant to engine vibration, electrical noise and wide cabinet temperature variation
- Droop mode switchable for single unit or multi‑generator parallel running applications
Application Scenarios
- Diesel and gas generator set speed governing for standby and prime‑power generation units
- Industrial engine control for cogeneration and combined heat‑power plants
- Marine auxiliary generator engine speed control system
- Oil & gas field prime‑mover control for pump and compressor drive engines
- Emergency backup generator control inside factory, hospital and data‑center facilities
- Engine test‑bench speed regulation for internal‑combustion prime movers
Common Problems & Troubleshooting
- Governor no response, actuator static: Verify 24 VDC power supply voltage and polarity; inspect terminal block tightness; check actuator coil continuity and wiring harness open‑circuit fault.
- Engine overspeed risk or hunting oscillation: Readjust gain and stability potentiometer setting; inspect magnetic pickup gap and signal amplitude; check mechanical linkage sticking or excessive friction on fuel actuator.
- Engine cannot reach rated speed: Confirm speed set‑point adjustment; check magnetic pickup signal strength meets minimum 1.5 V RMS requirement; inspect actuator travel mechanical limitation.
- Unstable speed reading, fluctuating measurement: Check magnetic pickup wiring shielding grounding; separate sensor cable from high‑current power cables; inspect sensor mounting gap and pickup tooth wheel damage.
- High fuel during engine starting: Tune start fuel‑limit potentiometer; verify mechanical stop position does not exceed 95 % shaft travel range.
- Speed drifts under variable load: Switch between isochronous / droop mode according to operation requirement; re‑calibrate gain parameters; check for actuator mechanical wear.
- Unit internal damage from power surge: Isolate unit from over‑voltage source; inspect terminal mis‑wiring; replace controller if internal circuit components burnt.
