Product Description

ProSoft MVI56‑MCMR Reduced Data Block Modbus Master/Slave Communication Module

Product Description

The MVI56‑MCMR is a single‑slot backplane communication module manufactured by ProSoft Technology for Rockwell Allen‑Bradley ControlLogix chassis. It adopts a reduced data block design optimized for remote racks over ControlNet or EtherNet/IP. It has two galvanically isolated serial ports supporting RS‑232, RS‑422 and RS‑485, implementing Modbus RTU, Modbus ASCII and Enron Modbus protocols. The hot‑swappable module transfers Modbus register data between serial field devices and the ControlLogix controller, and stores configuration parameters in non‑volatile memory. It is built for continuous operation in industrial cabinets with electrical noise, vibration and temperature fluctuations and is widely supplied as spare hardware for upgrading and integrating legacy Modbus instruments into modern Logix‑based automation systems.

Product Functions

  • Each serial port can be independently configured as Modbus Master or Modbus Slave for bidirectional register data exchange
  • Reduced I/O data block to minimize backplane bandwidth consumption, suitable for remote chassis deployment
  • Galvanic isolation and EMC surge suppression to reduce ground‑loop interference on long serial wiring
  • Supports standard Modbus function codes and Enron floating‑point extension for process measurement values
  • Real‑time diagnostic counters for communication errors, timeouts and port status, accessible to the ControlLogix program
  • Front‑panel LED indicators display power, backplane activity, serial transmit/receive and fault alarms for local maintenance
  • Configuration saved in flash memory; supports online download and hot‑swap replacement without chassis power‑down

Application Scenarios

  • Power generation and distribution plants connecting transmitters, VFDs and protection relays to ControlLogix SCADA
  • Oil & gas pipeline compressor skids, offshore platforms and ESD emergency shutdown control systems
  • Water and wastewater treatment facilities integrating flow, level and analytical Modbus instruments
  • Mining conveyor, crushing and dewatering monitoring systems with remote I/O racks
  • Legacy equipment retrofit projects, linking older Modbus PLCs and meters to modern Rockwell automation platforms
  • Spare replacement and communication expansion for existing ControlLogix remote chassis installations

Common Problems

  • Intermittent serial communication dropout:incorrect RS‑485 A/B wiring polarity, missing termination resistor, long unshielded cable or strong electromagnetic interference
  • Module not recognized by the Logix controller:backplane slot fault, incompatible firmware revision, corrupted configuration or insufficient chassis power budget
  • Data registers show zero or incorrect values:Modbus register addressing offset confusion, wrong function code selection or mismatched floating‑point byte order
  • High communication timeout errors:baud rate, parity or data‑bit mismatch, slow field‑device response or excessive bus loading
  • Front‑panel status LEDs off after power‑on:chassis backplane power failure, blown internal fuse or damaged onboard power circuit
  • Configuration lost after power cycle:flash memory wear, incomplete configuration download or unstable 5V backplane supply during saving
  • Poor performance in remote racks:oversized data mapping, frequent polling of many devices or ControlNet bandwidth saturation
