Product Description

NI PCI‑8512 High‑Speed CAN FD PCI Communication Interface Card

Product Description

The PCI‑8512 is a PCI‑bus high‑speed CAN / CAN FD interface card manufactured by National Instruments (NI). It has 1‑port or 2‑port DB9 connectors with built‑in CAN transceivers, supporting CAN 2.0A/B and CAN FD protocols up to 1 Mbps. It adopts dedicated onboard processor and NI‑XNET DMA engine, which can transmit and receive CAN frames without frequent host CPU interruption. Equipped with RTSI hardware synchronous trigger interface and microsecond‑level time stamping, the board is designed for industrial test benches and real‑time simulation systems. It is widely used as spare replacement and upgraded communication hardware for automotive and industrial bus test platforms.

Product Functions

  • Real‑time sending, receiving and monitoring of CAN and CAN FD bus messages, supporting frame streaming and offline message replay
  • NI‑XNET DMA data transmission reduces host computer CPU load and achieves low‑latency high‑throughput bus communication
  • Import CANdb DBC, LDF and FIBEX database files to convert raw CAN frames into physical engineering signals automatically
  • RTSI synchronous trigger and 1μs high‑precision timestamp, realizing synchronization with data acquisition cards and test instruments
  • Hardware‑accelerated frame scheduling supports up to 192 real‑time signals for rapid control prototyping and HIL simulation
  • Complete bus diagnosis, error counting and fault recording, detecting bus off, bit errors, CRC errors and overload conditions
  • Compatible with LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI and C/C++ development environments for flexible secondary development of test systems

Application Scenarios

  • Automotive ECU hardware‑in‑the‑loop(HIL) simulation, vehicle CAN bus testing and diagnostic verification
  • Rapid control prototyping of new energy vehicle motor, battery management and vehicle control units
  • Industrial automation CANopen and J1939 bus network monitoring, data logging and fault diagnosis
  • Construction machinery, agricultural machinery and mobile equipment controller communication test benches
  • Aerospace, railway and special vehicle real‑time bus data acquisition systems
  • Spare replacement and technical upgrade of legacy NI CAN PCI test hardware on existing production test stations

Common Problems

  • Board not recognized by PC:poor PCI slot contact, incompatible motherboard PCI version, outdated NI‑XNET driver or damaged onboard power circuit
  • CAN bus communication intermittent dropout:incorrect DB9 pin wiring, missing 120Ω terminal resistor, severe electromagnetic interference or transceiver damage
  • CAN bus‑off fault:short circuit on field bus line, bus overload, wrong baud rate setting or inconsistent CAN FD configuration
  • Signal parsing failure:DBC database version mismatch, wrong signal start bit / length definition or endian byte order error
  • High message delay and data loss:excessive bus load, insufficient onboard buffer resources, outdated firmware or host system performance bottleneck
  • RTSI synchronization abnormality:incorrect trigger line wiring, wrong clock configuration or damaged front‑panel synchronous connector
  • Driver crash during long‑time running:conflicting third‑party CAN software, incomplete driver installation, PCB dust accumulation and overheating
