Product Description

ABB NE870 3BSE080239R1 Industrial RNRP Router and Firewall

Product Description

The NE870, part number 3BSE080239R1, is a DIN‑rail mounted managed Layer3 industrial router and firewall designed for the ABB Ability System 800xA DCS platform. It is equipped with 11 RJ45 Ethernet ports, including three 10/100/1000Mbps gigabit ports and eight 10/100Mbps fast‑Ethernet ports. It adopts redundant 24V DC power input, supports the proprietary Redundant Network Routing Protocol (RNRP), and provides network zoning and IEC 62443 security isolation. The rugged aluminum housing is built for continuous operation in power, chemical and heavy‑industry control cabinets with vibration, dust and electromagnetic interference. It is widely used as spare network hardware for existing ABB 800xA distributed control systems.

Product Functions

  • Layer3 routing and firewall functions to divide automation networks into independent security zones and isolate control network from office or client‑server network
  • RNRP redundant network routing to establish dual physically separated networks and eliminate single‑point‑of‑failure risk for DCS communication
  • 11‑port Ethernet switching and routing; gigabit ports for high‑bandwidth server connections and 10/100Mbps ports for field controllers and I/O devices
  • Redundant DC power supply with alarm relay output for power‑failure monitoring and fault notification
  • USB port for local configuration backup and restoration, CLI console port for on‑site maintenance and debugging
  • Front‑panel LED indicators showing power, link status and system faults for quick field diagnosis
  • Built‑in hardware self‑diagnosis for power circuits, Ethernet transceivers, routing engine and internal watchdog monitoring

Application Scenarios

  • Thermal power plant 800xA DCS control network segmentation, redundant network construction and safety zone isolation
  • Petrochemical and chemical process control systems separating production control network from enterprise management network
  • Off‑shore oil & gas platforms and pipeline compressor control cabinets with high network reliability requirements
  • Metallurgy, pulp & paper and water treatment large‑scale distributed automation network architecture deployment
  • Industrial cybersecurity transformation projects complying with IEC 62443 network zoning requirements
  • Spare replacement and network upgrade of legacy ABB 800xA DCS router and firewall hardware

Common Problems

  • RNRP redundant network switching abnormality:incorrect RNRP parameter settings, inconsistent router configuration, damaged Ethernet cables or port hardware degradation
  • Port link intermittent dropout:loose RJ45 connectors, poor cable shielding, excessive electromagnetic noise or damaged internal PHY chip
  • Firewall blocking valid DCS communication:wrong access control rules, missing whitelist for controller/server IP addresses or misconfigured port forwarding
  • Power alarm activated with normal operation:one redundant power channel lost, loose power terminal wiring or unstable 24VDC input voltage
  • Configuration lost after power cycle:incomplete USB configuration saving, flash memory aging or power fluctuation during writing process
  • Cannot connect via console or USB:damaged maintenance port, incorrect terminal parameters or corrupted system firmware
  • Continuous hardware diagnostic alarm:dust accumulation inside aluminum enclosure, poor cabinet ventilation and overheating caused by long‑term operation
