Juniper MPC7E‑MRATE‑RTU Multi‑Rate MPC Line Card for MX Series Routers
Product Description
The MPC7E‑MRATE‑RTU is a plug‑in Modular Port Concentrator (MPC) line card developed by Juniper Networks for MX240, MX480 and MX960 3D universal edge routers. It is equipped with 12 QSFP+/QSFP28 multi‑rate optical ports, supporting 10GbE,40GbE and 100GbE. The RTU represents Right‑To‑Use licensed port activation. Powered by Juniper Trio chipset, the card provides up to 480Gbps line‑rate throughput, carrier‑grade reliability and rich L2/L2.5/L3 routing functions. It adopts hot‑swappable design and works under Junos OS, widely used as spare and upgraded network interface hardware for operator and large enterprise core routers.

Product Functions
- 12 flexible multi‑rate optical ports, four ports support 100GbE QSFP28, all ports support breakout into multiple 10GbE interfaces
- Line‑rate packet forwarding, complete Layer2 switching, L2.5 MPLS and scaled Layer3 routing, L3VPN and HQoS traffic scheduling
- RTU license controls the quantity of activated ports, realizing flexible bandwidth expansion without hardware replacement
- Support hot‑swap online replacement, redundant power and fan monitoring to reduce network outage risk
- Rich telemetry and real‑time traffic statistics, alarm reporting for port, transceiver and hardware faults
- Front‑panel LED indicators display power, port link status, running state and fault warnings for maintenance
- Built‑in hardware self‑diagnosis for chipset, memory, optical interfaces and onboard power supply
Application Scenarios
- Telecom carrier edge aggregation network, 5G mobile backhaul and metro optical transport network
- Large enterprise core network, data center border gateway and cloud interconnection access
- IP/MPLS service bearer network, L3VPN and internet service platform of ISPs
- High‑bandwidth multimedia transmission, video streaming and large‑capacity traffic convergence
- Spare replacement and capacity expansion upgrade of existing Juniper MX series routing chassis
Common Problems
- Port cannot be activated:RTU license mismatch, insufficient authorized port quantity, incorrect Junos OS version or invalid license file
- Optical link intermittent dropout:faulty or incompatible optical transceiver module, dirty fiber end face, poor cable connection or signal attenuation
- Line card offline or not detected by chassis:backplane slot failure, insufficient cooling airflow, fan fault or power rail abnormality
- Low forwarding performance and high latency:excessive QoS queue congestion, incorrect breakout configuration or overloaded routing table resources
- Junos system alarm and hardware diagnostic error:dust accumulation, overheating, aging onboard chips or firmware bugs
- Breakout port configuration failure:unsupported transceiver type, wrong port mode command or incompatible line‑card firmware
- MPLS/VPN service abnormality:routing protocol neighbor flapping, resource exhaustion or inconsistent service template configuration
