Product Description

5501-432 Woodward Dual Channel Actuator Control Module

1. Product Description

5501-432 is a dual-channel actuator control card belonging to Woodward NetCon / MicroNet Plus turbine control rack series, SIL2 safety certified. It is a rack hot-swappable Eurocard module used to drive hydraulic, pneumatic and proportional fuel/steam valve actuators. Each independent channel supports LVDT/RVDT position feedback transducers, with built-in high-speed PID closed-loop position regulation and PWM current output drive, maximum single-channel output current 200mA (peak 245mA). The module is powered by rack backplane 5VDC/24VDC bus, equipped with multi-channel signal isolation circuit to resist high electromagnetic interference in power plant cabinets. Front panel integrates fault LED indicators and multi-core signal terminals, matched perfectly with CPU5200 controller 5466-1045, speed card 5464-658, Bently 3500 TSI and GE Mark VIe unit control systems.

2. Core Product Functions

  1. Dual independent closed-loop position control: Receive valve position setpoint from system CPU, collect real-time LVDT/RVDT feedback signals, execute high-speed PID algorithm to adjust PWM drive current, precisely control fuel valve, steam valve and compressor anti-surge valve opening.
  2. Built-in actuator full fault diagnosis: Continuously detect actuator coil open circuit, short circuit, feedback sensor disconnection, signal drift and over-current output; trigger fault alarm and position lock protection to avoid runaway valve risk.
  3. Isolated anti-interference signal processing: Channel-to-channel galvanic isolation design eliminates ground loop interference generated by motors, inverters and high-voltage power cables, ensuring stable valve positioning in harsh industrial environments.
  4. Online parameter tuning without shutdown: Adjust PID proportional, integral, differential gain, dead zone and limit parameters via Woodward configuration software during unit operation, no need to stop the whole control system.
  5. Real-time data exchange with main CPU: Transmit actual valve position, actuator drive current and fault alarm codes to 5466-1045 CPU through rack backplane bus; upload operation data to HMI and DCS monitoring platform.
  6. Valve travel limit & anti-surge interlock logic: Built-in upper/lower travel limit protection for each channel, support compressor anti-surge valve quick reset interlock when abnormal flow occurs.

3. Application Scenarios

  • Gas turbine & steam turbine power plants: Fuel control valve, main steam valve, extraction valve closed-loop position control, matched with Woodward CPU5200 5466-1045 control system
  • Oil & gas pipeline compressors: Anti-surge valve and throttle actuator precise regulation, cooperate with 5464-658 speed measurement module
  • Offshore platform and marine generator units: Hydraulic actuator control under salt fog and strong electromagnetic interference environment (DNV certified)
  • Industrial diesel generator sets and distributed power stations: Governor fuel rack actuator position control and load regulation
  • Combined cycle power plant auxiliary unit control, integrated with Bently 3500 vibration monitoring system and GE Mark VIe DCS platform
  • Chemical process plants: Reactor regulating valve, furnace air-fuel ratio proportional actuator closed-loop control

4. Common Typical Issues & Root Causes

Fault PhenomenonRoot Causes
Valve position severe drift, unstable hunting swingImproper PID parameter gain, LVDT sensor aging, loose feedback wiring, strong cabinet electromagnetic interference
Actuator open-circuit alarm continuously triggeredBroken actuator coil cable, damaged internal drive output circuit, loose terminal wiring
Module power indicator off, no actuator drive outputRack 5V/24V power supply loss, poor contact between module and backplane, blown internal power fuse
DCS reports no valve position feedback dataLVDT/RVDT sensor failure, broken feedback cable, internal sampling circuit damage of module channel
Intermittent actuator control failure during high load operationModule overheating due to poor cabinet heat dissipation, aging internal PWM drive chip, loose backplane bus connector
Valve cannot reach full open/full close travel limitIncorrect travel limit parameter configuration, actuator mechanical jamming, insufficient drive current output
