The PFTL301E-1.0kN 3BSE019050R1000 is a load cell from the Pressductor PillowBlock series.

This sensor is specifically designed for measuring horizontal tension in coil processing, such as on paper, textile and plastic film production lines.

Its uniqueness lies in the fact that, unlike traditional sensors that simultaneously measure the weight and tension of rolls, the PFTL301E only senses the horizontal component of the roll tension.

This means that it can be precisely selected based on actual tension requirements, ensuring outstanding tension measurement performance even when heavy-duty rollers and mild tension coexist. Its rated load is 1.0 kN (approximately 225 pounds).

The load cell adopts ABB's unique Pressductor® magnetoelastic technology. This technology generates signals by sensing changes in the magnetic field rather than relying on physical deformation,

Unlike indenters that measure vertical components, they do not measure the weight of tension rollers. Therefore, 

the specifications of these pressure heads can be determined solely based on the magnitude of the tension and the functions corresponding to the upper limit of their measurement range (at which point the performance of the pressure head is the best).

Magnetomechanical technology

The pressure head of ABB's Millmate strip tension measurement system is based on the renowned Pressductor® magnetostrictive effect, which was patented in 1954. 

According to this principle, the magnetic properties of steel are affected by mechanical forces.


There are four holes inside the sensor. Two mutually perpendicular coils are wound together through these holes. One coil is applied alternating current, and the other coil serves as the measuring coil. 

Since the two coils are perpendicular to each other, there will be no magnetic coupling between them as long as there is no load on the sensor.


If there is a load on the sensor (as shown in the figure), the magnetic field characteristics will change. The magnetic permeability of steel will decrease in the direction of force application and increase in the vertical direction. 

This causes a change in the symmetry of the magnetic flux, and part of the magnetic flux will induce an induced voltage in the secondary side coil. The induced voltage is proportional to the load.
