Product Description

WOODWARD 2301D 8273-501 Controller Fast Ship

Product Description

The Woodward 2301D (part number 8273‑501) is a microprocessor‑based digital speed governor and load‑sharing controller for reciprocating engine‑driven generators. It accepts magnetic pickup speed signals and CT/PT power measurements, providing analog drive output to fuel actuators. This panel‑mount unit supports both droop and isochronous control modes. It is equipped with RS‑232 / RS‑422 serial communication with Modbus RTU, configurable analog and discrete I/O, local keypad and display for setup and monitoring. The power supply range is 18–40 VDC. This model is obsolete from Woodward original production; refurbished and surplus units are the primary replacement supply.

Product Functions

  • Precise closed‑loop engine speed regulation based on magnetic pickup signal
  • Isochronous or droop load sharing for multiple generators running in parallel
  • Analog actuator drive output to control fuel rack position
  • Load pulse and load rejection logic to improve transient response under sudden load changes
  • Over‑speed detection and protective trip relay output
  • Local parameter configuration, runtime monitoring and fault history via front keypad and display
  • Serial Modbus RTU communication for remote SCADA monitoring and setpoint adjustment
  • Configurable discrete inputs and relay outputs for external interlocks, alarms and status feedback

Application Scenarios

  • Land‑based stationary diesel and gas generator sets for industrial power plants
  • Marine auxiliary generator parallel control systems
  • Oil & gas compressor packages, offshore platform prime movers
  • Standby and emergency power systems for hospitals, data centres and factories
  • Retrofit projects replacing older analog governors or early digital speed controllers
  • Distributed microgrid generator paralleling applications

Common Issues

  • Engine speed hunting: incorrect PID gain settings, noisy MPU signal, or actuator mechanical backlash
  • Poor load sharing after paralleling: reversed CT polarity, mismatched load‑sharing gains or improper CT ratios
  • No actuator drive output: damaged internal drive circuit, loose terminal wiring or incorrect output configuration
  • Intermittent speed reading loss: magnetic pickup gap too large, damaged pickup sensor or shield grounding error
  • Communication failure: wrong baud rate, address conflict, missing termination resistor or RS‑422 wiring reversal
  • Front display blank or frozen: unstable DC supply voltage, internal power circuit ageing or firmware crash
  • Parameter corruption after power cycle: failed non‑volatile memory; requires re‑loading saved configuration
  • Obsolete original parts: brand new OEM controllers unavailable; refurbished units require full bench calibration before installation
