WOODWARD SPM‑D11
Product Description
The Woodward SPM‑D11 is a microprocessor‑based generator synchronizing and load‑sharing controller (part series 8440‑17xx). It works with Woodward or third‑party governors and AVRs for single‑phase or three‑phase AC generators. The unit provides analog or discrete bias outputs to match frequency, phase angle and voltage before breaker closure. It integrates 2‑line LCD display, multi‑level password protection, relay outputs, optional Modbus RTU / CAN communication, and is designed for panel mounting in rugged industrial environments. Operating temperature ranges from ‑20 °C to +70 °C, front panel IP42 rating (IP54 with gasket kit).

Product Functions
- Automatic synchronisation: slip‑frequency or phase‑match synchronisation with voltage matching between generator and busbar
- Two‑phase voltage sensing for both generator and bus, synchronising check and synchronising timeout monitoring
- Discrete or analog raise/lower outputs to adjust engine speed and generator voltage
- Isochronous real and reactive load sharing for parallel generator sets, plus power factor control
- Soft unloading and load transfer control
- Generator protection: over/under‑voltage, over/under‑frequency, reverse power, overload alarms and trips
- Local LCD status readout, fault alarm indication, parameter configuration and diagnostic logs
- Optional Modbus RTU / CAN communication for remote monitoring and SCADA integration
Application Scenarios
- Multi‑generator parallel systems for industrial stationary power plants
- Marine main and auxiliary generator bus synchronisation
- Offshore platforms and oil & gas power generation packages
- Distributed microgrid systems and standby generator installations
- Retrofit upgrade projects replacing older synchronising relays and analogue synchronisers
Common Issues
- Incorrect voltage/frequency measurement: bad PT wiring, blown fuses or mismatched voltage tap settings lead to synchronisation refusal or false alarms
- Slow or failed synchronisation: improper bias output gain; governor or AVR response too slow to follow SPM‑D11 commands
- Load hunting after paralleling: mismatched load‑sharing parameters, incorrect CT wiring or polarity reversal
- Intermittent communication loss: grounding noise, wrong baud rate / node address or bus termination resistor missing
- False reverse‑power trips: CT polarity error, incorrect reverse‑power threshold or delay setting
- LCD blank or unresponsive: unstable DC supply (voltage below 9.5 V), loose terminal connections or internal power circuit damage
- Parameter loss after power cycle: faulty internal memory or incomplete save procedure after configuration changes
