Product Description

Motorola MVME374‑1 VMEbus Intelligent Ethernet Communication Controller Board

Product Description

The MVME374‑1 is a 6U single‑slot VMEbus intelligent network controller manufactured by Motorola. It is built around an independent MC68040 processor with onboard DRAM and dedicated Ethernet protocol processing hardware. It features one AUI 10 Mbps Ethernet port and two DB‑25 RS‑232 serial ports, operating as a VME master/slave device. The conformal‑coated PCB is designed for rugged industrial chassis environments with vibration, dust and electromagnetic interference. Instead of being a main SBC, it acts as an off‑load communication co‑processor for VME racks and is widely supplied as spare replacement hardware for legacy long‑lifespan embedded control systems.

Product Functions

  • Independent TCP/IP protocol offloading, reducing network processing burden on the main VME single‑board computer
  • High‑speed bidirectional data exchange between VMEbus and 10Mbps Ethernet via shared memory and DMA transfer
  • Dual RS‑232 serial interfaces for local console debugging, terminal connection and peripheral data acquisition
  • Support VME interrupt generation, real‑time data buffering and event timestamping for control and diagnostic logging
  • Front‑panel reset and abort buttons plus LED status indicators for power, network link and fault diagnostics
  • Onboard hardware self‑diagnosis for local CPU, memory, Ethernet transceiver, serial circuits and VME interface
  • Hot‑swap capable within compatible VME chassis for maintenance without shutting down the entire rack

Application Scenarios

  • Power plant turbine control and generator monitoring VME‑based distributed control racks
  • Off‑shore oil & gas platforms, marine vessel engine room automation and navigation control systems
  • Heavy industry, steel mills and petrochemical plant legacy DCS and rotating machinery monitoring cabinets
  • Radar, ground communication stations and long‑life military embedded data acquisition equipment
  • Scientific instruments, particle accelerators and medical imaging equipment VME network gateway nodes
  • Spare replacement and retrofit of aging Motorola VME communication hardware in existing installations

Common Problems

  • Ethernet link intermittent dropout:dirty AUI connector, faulty transceiver cable, aging onboard PHY chip or severe site electrical noise
  • Module not detected by VME host:oxidized backplane pins, incorrect slot configuration, corrupted firmware or insufficient chassis cooling airflow
  • Serial port communication failure:damaged DB‑25 connectors, baud‑rate/parity mismatch or aging RS‑232 driver circuits
  • Data loss and DMA transfer errors:DRAM chip degradation, poor memory socket contact or VME bus termination mismatch
  • Board boots but no network forwarding:corrupted network firmware, incorrect IP configuration or exhausted onboard buffer resources
  • Random system watchdog resets:aging electrolytic capacitors, PCB dust accumulation and overheating in poorly ventilated cabinets
  • Self‑diagnosis persistent hardware alarm:long‑term thermal fatigue of components, internal track corrosion or chip‑level degradation
