Product Description

Motorola MVME167‑33B VMEbus Single‑Board Computer(SBC)

Product Description

The MVME167‑33B is a 6U single‑slot VMEbus single‑board computer developed by Motorola Computer Group. It adopts MC68040 CPU running at 33MHz with integrated FPU and MMU, fitted with 16MB ECC DRAM, boot flash memory, battery‑backed SRAM and real‑time clock. The board integrates dual Ethernet ports, SCSI interface, four serial communication channels and a parallel port. It can operate as a VME system controller or a slave processor, supporting VME64 A32/D64 high‑speed block data transfer. Designed for rugged embedded environments, the conformal‑coated PCB can withstand vibration, wide temperature variation and heavy electromagnetic interference. It is a legacy industrial control CPU widely used in long‑life equipment and still supplied as spare replacement hardware.

Product Functions

  • Real‑time computing and logic execution for embedded control based on MC68040 processor, compatible with VxWorks and other RTOS
  • Act as VMEbus master controller to manage data exchange between all VME I/O modules in the chassis
  • Onboard Ethernet, SCSI, serial and parallel interfaces realize network communication, mass storage and field device connection
  • Battery‑backed SRAM and RTC preserve critical configuration data and time stamps during power outage
  • Support multi‑task real‑time scheduling, DMA high‑speed data transmission and multiprocessor cooperative operation
  • Complete onboard hardware self‑diagnosis for CPU, memory, network, bus and power faults, with status LED indicators
  • Boot from local flash/ROM and support firmware upgrade for long‑term stable operation of dedicated control systems

Application Scenarios

  • Industrial automation, CNC machine tools and production‑line motion control VME rack systems
  • Power plant turbine control, substation automation and generator monitoring equipment
  • Aerospace, shipboard and offshore platform rugged embedded control and data acquisition systems
  • Medical CT and diagnostic imaging equipment, scientific instruments and particle accelerator control
  • Radar, communication ground station and military long‑lifespan electronic control units
  • Spare replacement and maintenance retrofit of aging VME‑based legacy control systems

Common Problems

  • Boot failure or no startup:aging onboard electrolytic capacitors, depleted lithium backup battery, corrupted boot firmware or faulty flash chips
  • Memory parity / ECC error alarms:DRAM chip degradation, poor socket contact, overheating or dust contamination on PCB
  • VMEbus communication instability:oxidized backplane connectors, slot contact wear, bus termination mismatch or excessive electrical noise
  • Ethernet or serial port intermittent dropout:transceiver circuit aging, damaged cable connectors, incorrect baud rate or network configuration
  • Loss of stored configuration and clock reset after power off:backup battery voltage drops below threshold and cannot retain SRAM data
  • System freeze and watchdog reset:RTOS task overflow, insufficient memory resources, firmware bugs or excessive VME bus load
  • Continuous hardware diagnostic faults:long‑term thermal fatigue of components, blocked chassis airflow and overheating caused by dust accumulation
