Product Description

Schaller VISATRON VN115/87 Oil Mist Detector

Product Description

The VN115/87 is VISATRON oil mist detector manufactured by Schaller Automation, a safety device for monitoring crankcase oil mist concentration of medium and high-speed four-stroke diesel engines. It extracts gas samples from the engine crankcase via sampling pipes and measures opacity using infrared optical detection principle. This marine-certified equipment complies with IACS UR M67 rules. The VN115/87 series has been superseded by VN115/87plus, and available stock mainly includes surplus and refurbished units for marine and power engine safety system maintenance.

Product Functions

  • Continuously sample gas from diesel engine crankcase and measure oil mist opacity concentration in real time
  • Adjustable multi-level alarm thresholds for pre-alarm and high oil mist danger alarm output via relay contacts
  • Trigger slow-down or emergency shutdown interlock signal when dangerous oil mist concentration is detected to prevent crankcase explosion
  • Built-in optical self-check and system diagnostic function to detect sampling pipe blockage, optical pollution and internal device faults
  • Front panel LED status indicators to display ready state, pre-alarm, high alarm and fault information locally
  • Adopt clean air purging design to protect optical lens and reduce contamination from oil residue
  • 24VDC power supply, relay dry contact output for integration with ship alarm system and engine safety control cabinet

Application Scenarios

  • Crankcase explosion protection for four-stroke marine diesel engines on cargo ships, ferries and offshore platforms
  • Oil mist safety monitoring for stationary diesel generator sets in power plants and backup power stations
  • Spare replacement for existing VN115/87 oil mist detector systems on marine engines
  • Preventive maintenance, overhaul and retrofit projects of engine safety protection systems
  • Compliance monitoring for classification society safety requirements of ship main and auxiliary engines
  • Spare parts inventory for shipyards, vessel owners and engine service vendors maintaining legacy diesel units

Common Problems

  • Frequent false oil mist alarms: optical lens contaminated by oil deposits, sampling pipe blockage or unstable sample airflow
  • Detector no response: sampling tube leakage, damaged vacuum injector or failure of internal pump assembly
  • Optical measurement drift: lens aging, dirty optical window, requiring regular cleaning and calibration
  • Relay alarm output failure: worn relay contacts, corroded terminal wiring or loose connector pins
  • System fault alarm: clogged air purge filter, power supply fluctuation or internal electronic board aging
  • Sampling pipe blockage: carbon and oil sludge accumulation, resulting in insufficient gas sampling and wrong readings
  • Maintenance limitation: original production phased out; spare optical components and service kits are relatively expensive
