Product Description

Woodward ProTech-GII 8237-1244 Overspeed Protection System

Brief Product Description

Woodward ProTech-GII 8237-1244 is a SIL3 certified triple modular redundant (TMR) overspeed protection device for rotating machinery safety control. This bulkhead-mount safety controller adopts three independent processing modules with 2-out-of-3 voting logic, delivering fast trip response when detecting overspeed or over-acceleration conditions. It accepts speed signals from magnetic pickup (MPU) sensors, features dual power supply inputs, local HMI displays and Modbus communication interface. With timestamped trip event logging and first-out fault indication, it provides reliable safety interlock for turbines and critical rotating assets. Built with IP56 enclosure and conformal coating for corrosive industrial environments. As a safety-critical spare component, it is available as fully-tested surplus and refurbished units for maintenance and retrofit of existing turbine protection systems.

Core Product Functions

  • Triple redundant speed monitoring and overspeed / over-acceleration protection for rotating machinery safety shutdown
  • 2-out-of-3 voting trip logic to avoid false trips while maintaining high safety integrity (SIL3)
  • High-speed 12ms trip response to trigger turbine trip valves and cut fuel/steam supply during dangerous speed excursions
  • Support active and passive magnetic pickup (MPU) speed sensor inputs for rotor speed measurement
  • Dual power input design (90–264VAC and 18–32VDC) with high signal select for power source redundancy
  • 4-20mA analog speed output and Modbus serial communication for SCADA system remote monitoring
  • Local keypad and multi-display HMI for on-site parameter setup, speed reading and status check
  • Timestamped trip log and first-out fault recording for post-trip root cause analysis and troubleshooting
  • Module hot-swap capability, allowing single module replacement without full system shutdown

Application Scenarios

  • Overspeed safety protection for gas turbine, steam turbine and hydro turbine in power generation plants
  • Oil & gas, petrochemical plant critical compressors, expanders and large reciprocating engines
  • Utility power stations, captive power plants and combined cycle power unit safety instrumented systems
  • Offshore platform rotating machinery safety protection and heavy industrial high-speed equipment monitoring
  • Retrofit and safety system upgrade for legacy turbine overspeed protection control cabinets
  • Spare replacement overspeed protection controller for maintenance, troubleshooting of existing Woodward ProTech-GII installations

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

  • Q: ProTech-GII 8237-1244 triggers false overspeed trip during normal turbine operation?
A: Inspect MPU sensor installation gap, cable shielding and grounding, check sensor wiring, verify speed calibration and module health status of three redundant channels.
  • Q: Cannot communicate with upper SCADA via Modbus?
A: Confirm serial wiring, baud rate, station address configuration, check module communication port and eliminate EMI interference from power cabinets.
  • Q: Can individual modules be hot-swapped while the turbine is online?
A: Yes, single module hot-swap is supported. Follow official safety operating procedures; remaining two modules maintain overspeed protection during replacement.
  • Q: Is this unit suitable for direct use on small motors without turbine trip valve assembly?
A: It is designed as safety overspeed protection for high-risk rotating equipment; verify safety loop design and actuator configuration before application.
  • Q: Is Woodward ProTech-GII 8237-1244 available for brand-new safety system projects?
A: This legacy overspeed protection unit has reached end-of-life. Only fully-tested surplus and refurbished units are offered for existing-site maintenance and retrofit tasks.
